Presentation
The current global conjuncture has indubitably evidenced that the relevance of the Luso-Spanish border for our knowledge of the history of the political and economic relations between the two Iberian nations is absolutely undeniable.
As Europe's oldest and most stable border, this unique landscape has long been not only a privileged space for encounters, exchanges, and alliances, but also a framework for the limits of national sovereignties, both in moments of peace and conflict.
The integration of Portugal and Spain into the Schengen Area led to the abolition of internal borders. Such an event has had significant repercussions within these territories and, thus, invites us to reflect on what has been done in recent years in terms of research projects aimed at promoting the improvement and sustainability of the living conditions of border communities.
Furthermore, a definition of a state of the art focused on the Spanish-Portuguese border between Badajoz-Elvas and Ayamonte-Vila Real de Santo António has proven to be such an enticing research challenge that it calls for the planning and organising a scientific meeting aimed at bringing together in the same event perspectives, research projects, and cooperative endeavours spread across the border.
For these reasons, we invite you to participate in this event organized by the CIPSH Chair for Global Studies at Universidade Aberta (Portugal) and held between the 24th and 26th April 2022.
We are pleased to announce that the participation of international experts who will integrate the scientific committee and some of the sessions has already been confirmed and will soon be disclosed.
Thematic areas
I – Heritage
The focus of this panel will be on a careful and reflective assessment of the evolution of the concept of “Heritage” aimed at defining what values it should represent in the future, especially in border areas, and what role it has had as a factor in territorial development.
This panel shall cover the full spectrum of heritage studies and works on specific case studies and group readings.
II – Cross-border research projects
This session will include projects from all scientific fields developed around the subject of cross-border cooperation or focused on the study of borders. Its aim shall be to publicize completed or ongoing endeavours, while exploring their main outcomes and their contributions to the economic, cultural, and social sustainability and resilience of border communities.
III – Language, literature, and oral tradition in border territories
Works presented in this panel will explore the confluence of languages in border territories, the representation of "otherness" in literature and oral traditions, and mutual influence as a reflection of encounters, transfers and interconnections. Its aim shall be to offer not only specific studies, but also wider readings.
IV – Cross-border cooperation
Papers presented in this session will be veered towards discussing, both globally and in a comparative fashion, recent political and institutional cross-border cooperation, highlighting the role of cultural associations, municipalities, Euro-cities, Euro-regions, etc. This panel will also include papers concerning other regions of the Iberian Peninsula or other countries.
V – Geography, History and Historiography of the border
The objective of this panel shall be to present insights into the sources of data concerning the history of international relations, key eveyday life aspects, and processes of confluence and conflict in relations between the two sides of the border over the centuries and in the context of general border studies, more specifically, of the area between Badajoz - Elvas and Ayamonte - Vila Real de Santo António. It will also promote the presentation of studies on the historiography of the border, i.e., reflections on the representation of borders in the construction of national histories.
VI – Border Archaeology
This session shall seek to analyse archaeological sites identified along the border territories between Badajoz- Elvas and Ayamonte- Vila Real de Santo António. It will also strive to assess the current state of cross-border archaeological activity performed by municipalities, private contractors, and academic institutions.
VII – Art on border territories: past and present
The aim of this panel will be to promote the study of artistic production on Iberian border territories, from the late medieval period to the present day. It shall focus on exploring the dynamics behind the constant flow of artists between the two countries, the sharing of artistic models and the identification of studios/workshops. It will also strive to highlight artists who are currently working on both sides of the border and whose work is contributing to the future of Art History within this region.
VIII – Border stories: biographies and memories
The objective of this session is to explore the lives of key personalities and routines of border communities. Activities such as smuggling, the relations between the two sides of the border, the roles of the "Guarda Fiscal", the structure and impact of border surveillance are some aspects that can be shared here with the scientific community.
IX – Borders and globalisation
Papers presented in this panel will be geared towards global studies and the potential of their application to the analysis of border territories.
